Lead teacher visits Reading Recovery lesson in school

Professional development and continuing education are hallmarks of Reading Recovery. School visits, as shown above, are just one part of the teacher education process.

Services offered at the ISU Reading Recovery Training Site

Initial Reading Recovery training

The training site at ISU offers initial Reading Recovery training to teachers in school districts which currently implement Reading Recovery or would like to in the near future.

Ongoing professional development

After the initial training, Reading Recovery teachers continue to attend six professional development sessions per year at ISU.

School visits

Teacher leaders from the ISU training site make school visits during the training year and beyond to support the Reading Recovery teacher and move them forward in their learning.

Unlimited guidance and teacher support

ISU teacher leaders are available to assist Reading Recovery teachers through phone calls or e-mail any time, about anything.

Implementation support

The Illinois State University Reading Recovery Teacher Training Site works with each school to ensure the best possible implementation of Reading Recovery and, therefore, the best results.

Annual data reports

Each year, Reading Recovery teachers submit data to Reading Recovery's National Data Evaluation Center housed at The Ohio State University. In return, school districts receive annual Reading Recovery data reports, one for the district and one for each school within the district. These reports guide the effective implementation of Reading Recovery, as well as provide insight into other literacy related issues in the school. Teacher leaders at Illinois State support Reading Recovery teachers and administrators as they analyze the data and make decisions based upon it.

Visitor Days

When Reading Recovery is implemented in a school district, other educators in the district typically want to learn more. As a result, the ISU Reading Recovery Site provides annual Visitor Days, in which guests can observe a Reading Recovery lesson through a one-way mirror, while also listening to the current teachers-in-training discussing it. A general presentation is provided, and open discussions cover a wide range of topics.

Early Literacy Seminar

Schools districts affiliated with the ISU Reading Recovery Site receive information about a week-long summer seminar hosted by the ISU Reading Recovery Training Site. Any educator (non-Reading Recovery teacher) in these schools may attend the seminar to learn more about early literacy assessment and instruction. The seminar is funded by the Illinois State Board of Education and is free to all who attend. For school districts who want to improve communication and collaboration between all early literacy educators and for school districts who want to improve early literacy assessment and instruction, the seminar is a valuable resource.
